Telegram can consume enormous amounts of storage if you're in many groups and channels. Unlike WhatsApp, Telegram handles very large files freely — which means it can also fill your phone with very large downloads if you're not careful.

Why Telegram Uses So Much Storage

  • Channels can post HD videos and large documents freely
  • Auto-download is enabled by default for photos
  • Voice messages and audio accumulate in active groups
  • Telegram caches all media you've viewed, even without downloading
  • Sticker packs each add a few MB, and many users have 20+ packs

How to Check Telegram Storage

Go to Telegram → Settings → Data and Storage → Storage Usage. You'll see a total and a breakdown by chat. 'Local Cache' shows temporary files for quick access.

Clearing Telegram Cache

In Storage Usage, tap 'Clear Cache' to remove all temporary files. This won't delete your downloaded files. On heavy users' phones, this often frees 500 MB–2 GB.

Note: Clearing cache means Telegram has to re-download media when you scroll back through chats.

Managing Auto-Download Settings

Go to Settings → Data and Storage → Automatic Media Download. Set photos to 'Never' on mobile data if you're in many groups, and limit video auto-download size.

Removing Files by Chat

In Storage Usage, tap any chat to see all downloaded media and delete selectively. Especially useful for news channels that post many images daily.

Controlling Sticker Packs

Each sticker pack is 1–5 MB. Go to Settings → Stickers and Masks and remove packs you no longer use.
