Android 14 brought significant improvements to how Android manages storage and how users control it. From smarter photo permissions to improved system storage management, here's what's new.

Granular Photo and Video Permissions

Android 14 introduces a new permission level that lets you choose specific photos or videos to share with an app. When an app requests media access, you now see: Allow All, Select Photos, or Don't Allow. This gives you much finer control over what cleaning apps can access.

Improved Storage Analyzer in Settings

Android 14 updated the built-in Storage menu with a detailed breakdown: System, Apps, Photos and Videos, Music, Documents, and Trash.

Android 14 Trash / Recycle Bin

Android 14 introduced a system-level Trash feature. Deleted files go to Trash first and are permanently deleted after 30 days — giving you a recovery window but also meaning deleted files still take up space for a month unless you empty the trash manually.

Action Required: If you've deleted files recently and storage is still high, go to Files → Trash and empty it manually.

Better Background App Restrictions

Android 14 gives more aggressive background restrictions to rarely-used apps. Apps in restricted mode can't run background tasks, which improves performance and reduces cache buildup.
